With the situation we are living in it is difficult to assure anything, but if Apple follows the path it has set for many years, the next iPhone will arrive next September. Besides, the so-called iPhone 12 is expected to be the biggest update to the iPhone for several years, so the expectation for the new Apple mobile is quite high.

And if the number of rumors around the Apple mobile is always quite high, imagine how it would be this year. So, even though there are still 5 months to go, we already know or think we know several facts about the iPhone 12. Let’s go through them to try to find out what Apple might have in store for us this year.

Since the iPhone X, launched in 2017, Apple has maintained the same design on its flagship device. In other words, we’ve had three generations of little tweaks but the same overall design. So most rumors are about a possible design change on the next iPhone.

Just some days ago, an image was published that some developers had found in the iOS 14 betas. It showed an iPhone without the notch that was so talked about when iPhone X was launched.

Also, this is not the first time you find indications that Apple is thinking of removing the notch from its iPhone. This is quite logical since the manufacturers of Android have already changed the trend to other types of systems to place the front cameras.

The problem is that Apple needs more space than most models since they have to place the sensor and camera system for Face ID on the front. We will have to wait and see how they solve this, but it seems unlikely that they will opt for the hole-in-the-screen system.

The removal of the notch would be the most differentiating element at the design level, but not the only one. There has been a lot of speculation about the possibility of Apple using a slightly more square design, similar to that of the iPhone 4 but updated.

Of course, there is nothing official, but the renders that some designers have done imagining a possible iPhone 12 based on iPhone 4 are nice. We will have to wait to see if Apple has taken note.

If the rumors are correct, the iPhone 12 screen will also undergo some changes from its predecessors. First in size, just some days ago, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who is usually right about these leaks by having sources within the Apple production chain, said that in 2020 we would see no less than three different iPhones.

According to this well-known analyst, the iPhone family of 2020 would look like this:

  • iPhone 12 with 6.1-inch OLED screen
  • iPhone 12 Pro with 6.1-inch OLED screen
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max with 6.7-inch OLED screen

In other words, a model would be added to the current range and the iPhone 12 Pro Max would expand to 6.7 inches. This is not at all unreasonable, as it would be the same as the Samsung Galaxy S20+.

In addition to the size changes, many claims that the iPhone 12 Pro will have a 120Hz screen. This would improve on the current model and match it with the top Android models and the iPad Pro.

iPhone 12

We know that Apple always goes against the trend. When all mobile phones already had a triple camera system, the iPhone stayed with the double camera. It wasn’t until last year that the apple company introduced the third sensor.

What will they do this year? The first rumors talked about the addition of a fourth sensor. But as the year progresses, it seems that this possibility is losing strength against other improvements that do not necessarily involve an increase in targets.

After the launch of the new iPad Pro, almost all analysts who follow the apple company’s news agree that the new iPhone 12 Pro will have a triple camera system plus a ToF sensor or 3D camera similar to the one seen on the Apple tablet.

Also, the camera will be another of the differentiating elements between models. According to the filtered information, iPhone 12 will have a double camera system. On the other hand, the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max would come with a triple system with the new ToF sensor.

Finally, the iPhone 12 Pro Max also has a new stabilization system for the ultra-wide-angle sensor, which is unique to this model.

As every year, the new iPhone will arrive with a new processor, no doubt about it. But which processor will Apple use? The new iPad Pro has the A12Z Bionic chip, but it’s unlikely Apple will use this same processor for the iPhone.

Rumors indicate that the iPhone 12 will use the new A14 processor. It’s a 5-nm chip that’s smaller, faster, and more battery efficient due to improved thermal management.

On the other hand, some analysts say the iPhone 12 Pro will have 6GB of RAM and the regular iPhone 12 will have 4GB of RAM. However, as you know, we won’t know this until someone breaks down the device since Apple doesn’t provide this information.

Biometrics and Connectivity

Removing the screen notch may result in a change in the biometric identification systems included in the iPhone.

If Apple has not found another way to place its facial identification system in a much smaller space, removing the notch would mean the disappearance of the Face ID system.

Does that mean we’d go back to Touch ID? Yes, but not as we know it today. Many analysts are betting on the addition of a fingerprint sensor under the screen, as most high-end Android devices already have.

To be honest, this solution would be the most logical. Although there would be the question of how to place the front camera. Can you imagine an iPhone with a hole in the screen? We don’t. So many of us hope that Apple will once again bring out the magic that characterized it years ago, and bring out a new way of placing the Face ID and the front camera on the iPhone. Perhaps a small edge on the top, very narrow? We’ll know in a few months. And you, what do you expect from the iPhone 12?
