DJI Mavic 3: DJI’s most powerful and spectacular drone arrives with two cameras and a 5.1K recording

DJI doesn’t stop. After launching the DJI FPV, the DJI Mini 2, the DJI Air 2S, and the DJI Action 2, the company has just announced the launch of its new flagship, the DJI Mavic 3. The device has been “completely redesigned”, has been enhanced with a Hasselblad camera, and now has a hybrid zoom of up to 28x.

We’ll get to know it later, but not before noting that the drone will be available for purchase starting today in several configurations. The cheapest, which is the standard version, costs $2,199 / €2,099, while the most expensive one goes up to $4,999 / €4,799. That said, let’s take a look at what DJI’s new product has to offer.

Two cameras and 5.1K recording

DJI Mavic 3

With the DJI Mavic 2 Pro, DJI started the collaboration with Hasselblad. The Mavic 2 Pro model features a one-inch sensor, while the Mavic 3 features a custom L2D-20c aerial camera with a 4/3 CMOS sensor and a 24-millimeter fixed lens.

Thanks to it, the drone is capable of capturing 20 megapixel still images in 12-bit RAW format and videos in 5.1K at 50 FPS or 4K at 120 FPS. As if that were not enough, it is also capable of recording slow-motion videos at 120 FPS. This sensor also increases dynamic range and eliminates noise more effectively in low light conditions.

In that regard, it is worth noting that it has a dynamic range of 12.8 stops and that the lens has a variable and adjustable aperture of f/2.8-f/11. Speaking of the fixed lens, it is equivalent to 24 millimeters and has 84º of field of view. Special mention should be made of its weight of only 12.5 grams.

The second camera is a 162-millimeter telephoto with 28x hybrid zoom and f/4.4 aperture. It features visual detection autofocus, which, in a nutshell, means that the Hasselblad camera works with other built-in visual sensors to detect distance and increase focusing speed.

The standard model (now we’ll understand what that “standard model” is) offers the precision of the Hasselblad Natural Colour Solution color profile. According to DJI, it is capable of capturing up to one billion colors thanks to the 10-bit D-Log profile.

But there is another model, the Mavic 3 Cine, which is an upgraded version with Apple ProRes 422 HQ encoding (3,772 MB/s). This codec requires fast and large storage, so the Mavic 3 Cine integrates a 1 TB SSD and a 10 GB/s data cable for file transfer.

As for intelligent video and photo capture modes, there is MasterShots (quick editing), Panorama (stitching images taken by the drone directly on the drone, up to 100 MP), and QuickTransfer (saving and processing footage on mobile devices, with the bonus of now supporting WiFi 6).

Better obstacle detection and more autonomy

DJI Mavic 3 landing

Now that we know how it records, let’s see what it offers in terms of security. The first thing that catches the eye is APAS 5.0, the obstacle detection and navigation system. This combines inputs from six visual sensors (fisheye) and two sensors (wide-angle) to detect obstacles in “all directions” and plan flights to avoid them.

It is an omnidirectional detection system that comes complete with ActiveTrack 5.0. This allows users to detect obstacles even in “Normal” mode and, in addition, allows the drone to move with the target as it moves sideways and can even fly alongside or around it. If it goes out of frame, the drone will automatically follow and reframe it.

On the other hand, it has GPS, GLONASS, and BeiDou and its accuracy have been improved. It also has a system for returning to the point of origin, with the bonus that this model detects the shortest, safest, and most efficient route. Moreover, the drone even calculates the wind speed to take it into account when returning.

Speaking of returning, let’s talk about the signal. The DJI O3+ transmission system has a maximum range of 15 kilometers and improves signal stability and performance. It’s the first DJI drone to offer a live signal in FullHD at 60 FPS.

Finally, and in terms of autonomy, the drone is capable of enduring up to 46 minutes in “ideal conditions”. That, according to DJI, is due to new motors and propellers, a higher capacity battery, and lower structural weight. The shape of the arms has been redesigned to make them more aerodynamic and, according to DJI, they offer 35% less drag than previous generations.
