iPhone 12 Mini: Features, Reviews, and Prices

There is the iPod mini, Mac mini, iPad mini, and now we have the iPhone 12 mini. The qualifier makes it clear that Apple offers here a particularly compact model that had previously been reserved for the iPhone SE but now shares in the iPhone 12 mini. Something less to the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, but certainly a smaller version of the iPhone 12.

We are above all aware of the new family of Apple smartphones. The iPhone 12 mini is different because of its 5.4 inches diagonal – hard to find another high-end mobile so compact – but beware, because this model may be small, but also has a great feature.

An ideal design for those who wanted to escape the trend of big mobile

iPhone 12 Mini

For years we have witnessed a strange race to achieve the largest possible mobiles. Virtually eliminating frames has caused screen diagonals to grow amazingly, and today mobile is typically around 6.5 inches.

The iPhone 12 mini is different from that trend and has a much more compact diagonal. The 5.4 inches seems almost ridiculous compared to the vast majority of screen diagonals in the mobile market, but it could be a blessing for those who are looking for precisely more compact mobiles.

In Android-based phones, there are certainly compact devices, but the iPhone 12 mini hits the table and makes a high-end mobile that is also compact.

It is even more compact than the iPhone 8 or iPhone SE (2020) with a 4.7-inch screen; the latter is hampered by a design from better times when having frames was not necessarily bad. The presence of the Touch ID sensor is one of the causes of the dimensions of the iPhone SE (2020), but in the iPhone 12 mini that need disappears because there is the Face ID facial recognition sensor.

It is precisely the presence of this sensor that makes the iPhone 12 mini’s notch slightly more noticeable – although it reduces its size – in this model than in the other models that have greater diagonal and more options to make this distinctive iPhone design feature go unnoticed.

In this design, as in the iPhone 12, the construction is based on “aerospace aluminum” on the edges, but also has ceramic protection to prevent scratches and make the phone more resistant. Apple pointed out that the iPhone 12 mini is the “smallest and lightest 5G phone in the world”.

5G Connectivity

5G Connectivity

The new iPhone 12 mini will integrate, like its big brothers, 5G connectivity. This is one of the main differences in the new models compared to the rest of Apple’s smartphones, and they are the first batch with this type of connectivity.

Apple did not integrate support for this connectivity last year for several reasons. Among others, because of a legal dispute with Qualcomm and the licenses, the latter imposed to use of its technology. After reaching an agreement in April 2019, they also ended up collaborating to offer this 5G connectivity in the next few years on Apple’s mobile phones.

This led to Intel abandoning the 5G modem market and Apple ended up buying that part of Intel’s business for 1 billion dollars, something that will foreseeably lead to them integrating their 5G chips in the future.

Nothing to envy about the iPhone 12, the Mini also meets standard

iPhone 12 Mini

Everything about the iPhone 12 is in the iPhone 12 mini: there is the aforementioned 5G connectivity, but also that innovative Apple A14 Bionic processor that enhances the entire experience that users of these mobiles will experience.

This smaller diagonal indeed means that the resolution will also be reduced proportionally: therefore, there are 2340 x 1080 pixels and a density of 476 dpi available. Besides, this screen with Super Retina XDR technology allows us to enjoy a sharp contrast of 2,000,000:1 and a maximum brightness of 1,200 nits, in addition to supporting both HDR and Dolby Vision.

Also, the new aluminum design, the support for recording in 4K and 60 frames per second, and the presence of the Super Retina XDR screen, which, of course, is simply a little smaller in the diagonal.

Like its big brother, it has the same dual-camera system (the main 12 MP f/1.6, and the ultra-wide-angle, also 12 Mpixels but f/2.4 and 120° field of view) in which it debuts that remarkable system called Smart HDR 3. There is also dust and water resistance thanks to the IP68 certification.

Another outstanding feature is that special wireless charger that comes with a brand name: MagSafe. This technology will now be the highlight of the iPhone 12 and is certainly part of the iPhone 12 mini. The magnets allow to automatic align the mobile phone with the chargers for an optimal charge, and powers up to 15 W are allowed.
