JBL Pulse 4

Like its predecessor JBL Pulse 3, the current model has maintained the traditional cylindrical shape of the brand’s devices. The soundbox features 360º colored LEDs inside the device that can be controlled through the JBL Connect app for Android and iPhone (iOS) phones. The app allows the user to choose which color or pulse pattern to display during music playback.

Overall, Pulse 4 is only available in black and has a slightly larger diameter than the previous one. Also, the model is heavier: it is 1.26 kg, compared to 960 grams for the third-generation option.

Power and sound

Regarding the sound, the JBL Pulse 4 is expected not to disappoint the user, with an output power of 20 Watts RMS and frequency response from 70 Hz to 20 kHz. This way, the model should have good bass, medium, and treble, and should also please the 360º sound system, interesting for environments with many people, ensuring that everyone has a good experience. Another interesting detail is the 80 dB sensitivity, which should lead to a well-defined sound with less noise. It is worth remembering that sounds above 85 dB can damage human hearing.

Features and Battery

The JBL Connect+ feature is already a feature of the JBL speakers. With the technology, up to 100 Bluetooth speakers can be connected synchronously, ideal for larger parties that need powerful sound. Besides, the device is compatible with Siri and Google Assistant voice assistants by pairing with the phone and also comes with new noise and echo cancellation technology to make or receive calls.

Another interesting feature is the water resistance, guaranteed by IPX7 certification. This means that it is possible to dive the device up to 1 meter deep for a maximum of 30 minutes. The certification is ideal to avoid accidental falls or for those who like to take the box to the beach or pool.

The Pulse 4 battery has gained power with 7,260 mAh and boasts up to 12 hours of continuous playback on a single charge. Even so, the expectation of autonomy does not change from the previous version, despite the addition of 1,260 mAh.

Price and Competitor

Pulse 4 can be considered an intermediate soundbox concerning other models offered by JBL. On the brand’s official website, the device appears for $199.95, a little higher than the price found on Amazon, which is $151.94. It is worth remembering that during the quarantine period due to the new coronavirus pandemic, the prices of various electronics rose. Also, the dollar also underwent a devaluation, which influenced the rise in prices in general.

Finding direct competitors of Pulse 4 in the market can be a somewhat complicated task. The big reason for this is because of the design and the presence of internal LEDs that follow the music that is playing. An alternative that can be interesting in this case is the LG XBoom Go PK7, which also has colored lights and is on sale for $169.
