PlayStation Plus: What the New Multiplayer Service for PS5 and PS4 Look Like

The launch of a game console is more than just a new device to deliver better graphics. It is also a change in the operating system and in the way of offering an experience never seen before. In this process of change, Sony has wanted to reform the well-known PlayStation Plus service, where both PS5 and PS4 will have a place.

A system that was born in 2010 to offer additional benefits to users who purchased it along with their PlayStation, but has seen how it has been losing ground to the competition. Microsoft launched a success in Xbox called the Game Pass, which is a subscription to enjoy hundreds of games without any limit.

Types of Subscriptions in Playstation Plus

PlayStation Plus

This new design aims to unite the old PlayStation Plus and PS Now to have a unified system on both consoles. Under the name of Project Spartacus, this system has different subscriptions that give more or fewer advantages, depending on the rate you hire. Depending on the one you choose, you will be able to enjoy similar advantages that Xbox Game Pass also has.

PlayStation Plus Essentials

This is the lifelong PlayStation Plus, which allows you to play online games and launches free games every month. These are the advantages that it has and the price:

  • Two downloadable games per month.
  • Access to online multiplayer.
  • Exclusive discounts.
  • Cloud storage for game saves.
  • The subscription will not change for members of this rate, as it is priced at $10 per month, $25 per quarter, and $60 per year.

PlayStation Plus Extra

From this subscription, there is the main novelty of this new system, is the inclusion of a wide catalog of games that can be downloaded and installed on the console while paying the fee. The rest of the advantages are the following:

  • Includes all the advantages of the Essential level.
  • Adds a catalog of up to 400 of the best titles for PS4 and PS5, including big hits from our PlayStation Studios catalog and external partner developers. At the Extra level, games are downloadable.
  • The price of this subscription is $14.99 per month, $39.99 per quarter, or $99.99 per year.

PlayStation Plus Premium

It is the most expensive subscription, which by the name does not entail much more mystery. It accumulates all the benefits of the previous rates, adding additional advantages that are very interesting:

  • It includes all the advantages of the Essential and Extra levels.
  • It adds up to 340 more games, including PS3 titles available via cloud streaming, as well as a catalog of popular classics, which are available for streaming and download from the original PlayStation, PS2, or PSP.
  • Cloud streaming of games from the original PlayStation, PS2, PSP, and PS4 is offered at the Extra and Premium levels in markets where PlayStation Now is currently available. Users can stream games from PS4 and PS5 consoles or PC.
  • This tier also includes access to limited-time game trials so players can try certain games before purchasing them.
  • The price is $17.99 per month, $49.99 per quarter, or $119.99 per year. PlayStation Now members move directly to this Premium membership.

Games in the PS5 and Ps4 Catalog

PS5 and PS4 games

Knowing that almost all include downloadable games that can be played infinitely, one of the first questions that users will ask is about the catalog that the service will have. It is important to know if it is worth paying the fee for both the Extra and Premium subscriptions, although it looks like it will include some great games.

The names that will be on the list of almost 400 games available have not yet been confirmed, but Sony has already revealed some of those that will be included in the catalog. Anyway, it won’t stop there, because this library will be renewed with more titles through Sony’s productions and external titles. These are the games that have been confirmed so far for both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4:

  • Death Stranding
  • God of War
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Mortal Kombat 11
  • Returnal

Sony intends to update most PlayStation Network territories with the new PlayStation Plus game subscription service by the end of the first half of 2022. That is, the new service will launch next June, with Asia being the first region to own this revamped PlayStation Plus. For its part, PlayStation Now will cease to operate as a standalone service, becoming part of the Premium subscription.
