There are arduous previous training, certification exams, and tests, as well as tough regional and country qualifiers where there are crying and joy. All this to reach a grand final of three days where more than 150 finalists from more than 50 countries compete to show who is the best in Microsoft office use. This is not eSports tournament like we said on our headline, but the World Championship Microsoft Office specialists.
The World Office Championship is an event that is reaching its annual edition number 18, where students from almost all over the world seek to prove that they are the best using either Word, Excel or PowerPoint.
Let us know what this peculiar competition consists of.
A competition to show who is the best in Office
The Microsoft Office World Specialist Championship is an annual competition organized by Certiport, a company that offers certifications related to software, which is aimed at students between 13 and 22 years old where they aim to demonstrate their skills in the use of Office tools.
In order to reach the world final, they must first have the Office Specialist certification and participate in the regional or state finals of each participating country, even in those countries where there are many participants, national qualifiers are made to choose the team of students who will represent each nation in the grand finale.
The rules of the qualifiers are the responsibility of the partners or institutions affiliated with the Office Specialist and Certiport program, so in each country it is different. There are also cases where participation is so large, that the qualifiers are huge events where cash prizes and awards are also offered.
For example, for the 2018 edition, more than 1.3 million applications were received from 116 countries, where only 152 finalists representing 51 countries made it to the grand final.
Each student must choose a category and the version where s/he will compete, and may not participate in more than one of the six options available:
- Microsoft Office Word 2013 Specialist
- Microsoft Office Excel 2013 Specialist
- Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2013 Specialist
- Microsoft Office Word 2016 Specialist
- Microsoft Office Excel 2016 Specialist
- Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2016 Specialist
This means that in each World Championship three winners are chosen for each category, both in their 2013 and 2016 version. That is, 18 big winners, nothing more. As for the prizes, which can not be compared with the millions of dollars that Epic offers in its ‘Fortnite’ tournament, they start at 1,500 dollars for third place, 3,500 dollars for second place and 7,000 dollars for first places in each category. They also receive trophies, medals, certifications and even Microsoft devices such as Surface or Xbox One.
How is the competition
The competition itself is the most interesting part, where there are even live broadcasts and coverage by some media around the world.
In the competition, each participant receives a printed document with instructions and an image of either a Word document, an Excel spreadsheet or a PowerPoint presentation, and each one must replicate it using their skills and knowledge in each of the tools.
The participant can choose the language which they want to use and will have a maximum of 50 minutes to complete the document. The winner will be the one who has the most attached document to the printed document and instructions. In case of a tie, whoever did it in the shortest time will win.
The winners receive the title of ‘World Champion’ and in some cases, there are countries where they are considered true celebrities, which makes many of them get employment proposals or scholarships to continue their training in other disciplines.
