TikTok was the most downloaded app worldwide on Android and iPhone (iOS) phones in the month of July. The popular short video social network maintained its lead for the sixth straight time in 2020, reaching more than 63 million installations in the Play Store and App Store. The survey, released on Wednesday (4), is from the app consulting portal SensorTower.
Despite being the overall leader, the short video app fell behind Facebook in the ranking of Play Store installations, occupying second place. It is worth remembering that in May and June, the app had reached the highest number of downloads also on Android. The specialized website SensorTower also reported a drop of two million downloads of TikTok compared to last month.
In July, the highest number of TikTok installations came from China, which had 15 percent of the total downloads. In second place was the United States with 9 percent. Facebook, the second-leading downloader, had about 53 million installs. In the case of Mark Zuckerberg’s social network, Indian users were the ones who most installed the application on their cell phones (27%), followed again by Americans (7%).
Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp took the third, fourth, and fifth positions, respectively, among the most installed apps worldwide. Overall, the report does not bring big surprises, since almost all the ranking apps have integrated the list of most downloaded this year and are already well known by users. Despite this, one popular app not often found in the ranking is Taobao, which ranked sixth in App Store installations in July. The platform is a popular marketplace in China, owned by the Alibaba group.
Whatsapp Business, a business-oriented version of WhatsApp, ranked tenth among the most downloaded apps in Google’s virtual store. It was the app’s first appearance in the ranking this year. The video editor CapCut continues its presence in the top ten apps for Android and iPhone since its first appearance in the ranking in March. This time it has dropped one position compared to June, going from eighth to ninth.
Among video calling services, Zoom was the app that achieved the highest number of installations, occupying the eighth place. It was followed by Google Meet, which appeared in the tenth position. It is worth noting that pre-installed native Android and iPhone apps are not counted by the survey, nor are gaming apps.
