TikTok was the application with the highest number of downloads in the App Store and Play Store in October. The information is from SensorTower, an intelligence site known for analyzing app performance, and was released this Thursday (5). The short video application fell in public graces this year and maintained the number one position in official store installations for the sixth consecutive month. In the top 5 of October are also WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Zoom.

TikTok’s downloads surpassed 66 million installations last month, of which 12% occurred in China, and 10% in Brazil. In second place is WhatsApp, with a total of 57 million downloads worldwide. The countries that have downloaded the most popular messaging app in the world are India and Nigeria, accounting for 30% and 10% of installations, respectively.

In the course of 2020, TikTok ranks first in online store downloads from January to March until in April it took second place, giving first place to the Zoom video call app. The period’s most critical, the pandemic may have contributed to the increased use of video call apps.

Since then, TikTok and Zoom continue in the world top 5 of the most downloaded apps, accompanied by WhatsApp and Facebook, which maintained their positions among the five apps with the highest number of downloads during the months of April to September, varying positions with Instagram, Messenger and, last month, Google Meet.

Among the ten most downloaded applications in October are also SnackVideo, Snapchat and Telegram in the Play Store, and YouTube, Taobao, and Widgetsmith in the App Store. SnackVideo is a similar app to TikTok that started appearing in the ranking of the most downloaded applications worldwide after India banned the short video app that is the sensation of the moment.

In the App Store, the Chinese shopping app Taobao ranked fifth among the most downloaded, while Widgetsmith, an application to customize the iPhone with widgets, ranked eighth. Apple’s new operating system update, iOS 14, was released on September 15th and brought the possibility of adding widgets to the smartphone’s home screen, which explains the recent popularity of Widgetsmith.

It’s worth remembering that SensorTower’s analysis ignores game applications, and the analyzed period was from October 1st to October 31st.
