Vivo APEX 2020: a concept with an “invisible” front camera and a screen curved up to 120°

Vivo APEX 2020

Last year’s Vivo APEX came with just frames and a fingerprint reader that worked anywhere on the screen. Now comes the third generation of the mobile concept from Vivo, a Chinese manufacturer belonging to the same group as OPPO and OnePlus.

The Vivo APEX 2020 is a spectacular mobile, as it could not be otherwise as it is a concept. It is a smartphone that explores the complete elimination of the side frames thanks to a curved screen. With the addition of a front camera under the screen, we have a product that is very close to the idea of the frameless mobile.

A curved screen design with virtual touch buttons

These mobile concepts are unlikely to be offered for sale, but the company has made them. That is, when a brand presents a concept it means that it has been built and even though it does not work completely stable, the detailed technology has been implemented. Although, we do not know the real state of maturity of this project since we have not been able to test it.

The main feature of the Vivo APEX 2020 is the design, with a 6.45-inch FullHD+ curved screen that bends at an angle of up to 120 degrees on both sides, virtually eliminating side edges and bezels from the front view. This gives a full-screen look and in fact, Vivo has decided to eliminate physical buttons such as power or volume.

This 120-degree waterfall display is a step forward from what we saw at OPPO in July 2019, which was 88 degrees. It is interesting to see how the BBK Electronics group takes advantage of each brand to show its different innovations, this Vivo APEX being probably the one chosen to show the most advanced technologies.

The Vivo APEX 2020 incorporates a Snapdragon 865 processor, 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. Some components of the latest generation are already accessible in other models. More interesting is the focus on battery and charging. Vivo does not give data on the number of milliampere-hours of the APEX 2020, as we will not be using it after all. But it does explain the features of its new 60W FlashCharge wireless charging system, which expects to charge to 2,000 mAh in 20 minutes.

Another new feature of the Vivo APEX 2020 is the inclusion of an “invisible” front camera. This is a front camera under the display. Through the pixel arrangement of the display and the circuit design, Vivo explains that they have successfully increased light transmission just above the camera by up to 6 times, thus reducing optical interference and allowing the picture to be taken. The sensor used is 16 megapixels and uses the ‘Pixel binning’ technique.

For the rear camera, the Vivo APEX 2020 picks up on one of the trends we are seeing this year; that of mobile phones with enhanced zoom. The APEX 2020 incorporates a continuous optical zoom with magnifications between 5x and 7.5x thanks to a combination of 4 groups of lenses. The secondary sensor comes with 48 megapixels and according to Vivo, incorporates a gimbal system to improve its stabilization by 200%. Although it is not clear to what extent it differs from other OIS systems that are already built into many high-end mobiles.

The X55 modem from Qualcomm also makes this a mobile phone with 5G connectivity.

Vivo APEX 2020, a black and white concept phone

From the APEX 2020 Live there is neither price nor availability. Although they do explain that this concept of mobile has been manufactured in black and another in white. Undoubtedly a most striking mobile that will be very interesting to have in hand to see how that camera works under the screen and to what extent the curved screens with such high angles improve (or not) the experience of the device. It’s still a concept, but it’s interesting to see how manufacturers like Vivo offer us small glimpses of what the future might hold.
